Album review Bac de Roda in music magazine Loop

Our album launch at the Mars Bar was a few weeks ago. It was the last really hot day of the year and gave this evening a special touch. It was the end of the summer and the official start of our upcoming concerts with our album ‘BAC DE RODA’.

Hanspeter Künzler wrote a great album review about ‘BAC DE RODA’ in the music magazine ‘Loop’. He correctly recognised that we often sip on a secret magic potion that makes us fly high creatively. We are very happy about this review and are highly motivated to write new songs.

REVIEW
Heaven knows what magic potion the Utopias have swallowed since their last album – in any case, the formerly apart civilised rockabilly chanson duo has mutated into a monster. The «twang» of the old days still shines through. Rebekka Zarkava also continues to use French in her lyrics. But her guitar playing suddenly oscillates between minimalist blues riffs, dark and gloomy ghostly chords and fiery Dick Dale. Meanwhile, her drumming partner Jura Dolezal creates a berserk intensity bordering on the uncanny. The change in mood can be illustrated: On the last LP, «Ginkgo Man» came across as neatly melodic. You wouldn’t want to encounter the new version presented here alone in a dark alley. «Bac de Roda» was recorded in Barcelona’s eponymous neighbourhood, with recording and mixing by Alberto Pérez, who has also handled the controls for Manu Chao. The drums are clearly more in the foreground, the guitars allow themselves a splendid amount of noise and the overall result is reminiscent of the lost Black Mountain. It’s high time that our latitudes also got a taste for it on a large scale.
